Construite sous le régime colonial français et ayant coûté la vie à près de mille personnes, la ligne de 163 kilomètres qui relie Fianarantsoa, sur les hauts plateaux, à la ville côtière de Manakara, à l'Est de l'île, reste souvent le seul moyen de locomotion pour les habitants.
